Due to a sluggish macroeconomic environment, high energy prices, and capacity overbuilding, the ethylene oxide and ethylene glycol industry is undergoing unprecedented challenges. These pose closure risks to many EO/EG assets, particularly those in Asia and Europe facing elevated energy and feedstock costs. Using Wood Mackenzie’s ethylene oxide and ethylene glycol asset benchmarking tool (EOEG-ABT), we compared the ethylene production margins in 2024 and 2028. We classified the assets into three risk levels based on their margin position and other factors. We also analysed the strategic importance of assets and the country's regulations and policies for a deeper analysis of the asset closure risks.
