In operation for over 40 years, Bulga Open Cut began mining in 1982, followed by underground mining in 1992. It is a large scale surface operation producing primarily thermal coal for export markets. The large-scale surface operation produces thermal coal primarily for export markets and sits 12 kilometres southwest of Singleton in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales. Bulga operated alongside the adjacent underground longwall mine before its closure in 2018. Glencore operates the mine on behalf of a joint venture comprising 85.9% Glencore, 12.5% NSSMC, and 1.6% JFE. The main lease covering the operation is ML 1547, granted on 5 April 2004.
