Report summary
Pueblo Viejo is one of the largest primary gold mines developed this century at a final capital cost of US$3.8 billion. The mine is a 60:40 joint venture between Barrick Gold (operator) and Newmont. The ore is refractory, and is treated via "whole ore pressure oxidation". Full production capacity was achieved in H2 2014 and the mine produced in excess of 1Moz/a between 2014 and 2017. Technical studies have been supportive of the process plant and tailings expansion which will enable a ramp-up of throughput to 14Mt/a and gold production to be maintained at over 800koz/a. In Q3 2020, this project received EIA approval and construction activities commenced.
