Report summary
BHP's South Flank mine started production in May 2021. The mine was completed on budget with a total capital intensity of US$45 per tonne. The South Flank deposit is located immediately south of BHP's existing Mining Area C (MAC) mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, 130 km north-west of the town of Newman and 8 km to the south of MAC. The mine is now producing at 80 Mtpa rate at full capacity and has an average raw grade of 62% Fe and both lump and fines. The mine will sustain BHP's average Fe grade to 61% at least and the overall proportion of lump from 25% to approximately 33%.
