Report summary
The Gourara Basin covers over 260,000 square kilometres of desert terrain in central Algeria. Exploration in this gas-prone basin dates back to the 1950s. Since then, a large number of primarily gas fields have been discovered in reservoirs of Silurian to Devonian age in the Paleozoic Gas play, the key play in the basin. New fiscal terms introduced in 2019 aimed at re-invigorating exploration have greatly improved the potential to create value. However the potential for material discoveries is limited, hence value creation is fairly short-burn. The gas-prone basin remains a challenging operating environment and explorers will need larger sized discoveries and price support to create any significant value. Project economics are variable and require a case-by-case analysis.
