Report summary

The Southern North Sea Basin is one of the most prolific gas producing areas in the world with exploration dating back to the 1960s. This analysis covers the offshore UK portion of the basin. Water depths are shallow, and the operating environment benign compared to northern sectors of the North Sea. In recent years, there have been a number of sizeable gas discoveries in the basin, including Cepheus (2014) and Winchelsea (2016) in the Carboniferous play and Tolmount East (2019) and Pensacola (2022) in the Permian play. These suggest there are still discoveries to be made in the Southern North Sea. The basin has extensive infrastructure, where discoveries close to existing production hubs could benefit from the potential for fast-track developments.
