Pelican is a small gas field located in the shallow waters of the Columbus sub-basin. It was discovered by Texaco in 1977, but the lack of gas market at the time delayed its development until the late-1980s. In 1988, the government formed Trintomar, a joint venture of three state-owned companies, specifically to develop the field in order to diversify supply away from Amoco.
