Tajikistan is an extremely minor oil and gas producer. However, deep pre-salt exploration potential could be substantial, especially for gas, and has attracted IOCs. In 2013, Total and CNPC farmed-in to the vast Bokhtar Contract Area – Tajikistan highest-profile upstream project. Operations have been suspended because of disappointing geological studies and fiscal and partner disputes. In future, Line D of the Turkmenistan-China Gas Pipeline will cross Tajikistan, giving it an important role in regional gas transit.
